RELEASED ON THE DIGITAL MINIMUM LABEL IN 2016

I began working with Puredata software (pd) around 2009. It quickly became a important part of my composition process in the studio and live. It continued to do so until I migrated to MaxMSP as my main live composition tool in late 2015. This release compiles a selection of pieces created within pd (mostly in preparation for live sets) that otherwise did not have a home.

TRACK INFO:

arpedsa / arpedsa b
In 2014 I began a collaboration with Erik Schoster (HeCanJog / Geodes). After some initial free-form jams we settled into being what I refer to as a “laptop duo” and donned the name Data Entropy. These tracks were created while building patches for Data Entropy sets. I created a group of poly-metric & poly-rhythmic step sequencers that would “drift” in pitch, time, & tempo. These sequencers are driving some physically modeled plucked strings, with various parameters being modulated and manipulated. These tracks show my initial tinkering with the patches.

logistics maps (scope)
This track also stems from preparation for Data Entropy sets. For the first series of live performances we decided to focus on using logistics maps equations as the basis of our improv compositions. This solo track was created while building the pd patches for that project.

repoolrgis
This track showcases the very first patch I created in pd. I used it moderately for various material in 2009-2010. Then in 2014 or so I came back to the patch and found that it still had a wealth of possibilities to explore. This track came from that period.

Dub & transe
These 2 tracks were created via a modified version of the excellent “Chop Suey” patch. They are live jams that have floated around on my computers for several years without a proper home. For my summer tour in 2016 I recreated my pd patch in MaxMSP. This was used extensively on my Tinkle Tangle EP (somnaphon.bandcamp.com/album/tinkle-tangle-ep).
